The Greater New Orleans Chapter, Ladies Auxiliary, Leukemia Society of America was organized in 1969 by a group of ladies dedicated to finding a cure for leukemia. Proceeds from early fund-raising efforts were donated to the new leukemia ward at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and also to local leukemia research efforts. This was later expanded to include leukemia research efforts in the Gulf South region, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The organization was incorporated in 1971 and became known as the Ladies Leukemia League.
Over the past 38 years, LLL has gained the reputation of being an organization of dedicated women volunteers, making a genuine and meaningful contribution to finding a cure for leukemia. It has been blessed with excellent leadership and has enjoyed enthusiastic support from the community for its fund-raising events.
The annual luncheon and fashion show, always enhanced by various drawings for special prizes, has had recent attendance of close to 1400 people; it has grown bigger and better with age. From the early days, when fashions and models were provided by Kreegers, to the more recent gala presentations by Dillards, the early-December Fete de Noel has become the most notable, and eagerly anticipated, opening to the holiday season in New Orleans.
While membership dues provide working capital for the organization, ALL proceeds from the luncheon, other smaller fund-raisers, and support received from individual donors are used to fund research grants. To date, LLL has awarded over $2 million dollars in grants to leukemia researchers.
